U.S. exemption from fur trim apparel labeling will be abolished

The U.S. Senate passed the law (HR2480) on December 7th to amend the "Fur Product Labeling Act" to require all fur trimming garments to be labeled.

According to the current "Fur Products Labeling Act," garments with small or low-cost furs (equal or lower than $150 animal skins) are not required to be labeled. It is estimated that about 14% of fur trimmings are exempt. HR2480 will repeal this exemption and will be effective 90 days after legislation.

The legislation also includes an exemption. Fur products sold by non-retailers are exempt from the Fur Product Labelling Act. The characteristics of these fur products are:

(1) Animal fur is obtained by trapping or hunting traps;

(2) The furs negotiated for transactions in houses, handicraft bazaars or other temporary or short-term establishments established by hunters are not the basic source of income for hunters. The law also requires the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to re-examine the guidelines for fur products within 90 days after the law comes into force.

Although U.S. law prohibits the importation of furs for dogs or cats, the exemption rights currently granted in the “Fur Product Labeling Act” do not apply to furs for dogs or cats, but members of the Diet still worry that some clothing mixed with cat and dog fur will flow into the United States. According to information from the Humane Society, dog fur is labelled as “Coyote” fur in a number of garments, and genuine fur is labeled “artificial fur”.

Last year, a member of the United States Congress pointed out that 96% of fur trim jackets tested by the Institute of Humanitarian Affairs contained dogs, wolves, or pelts, but they were not tagged or misbranded.

Several states, including Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin, have stipulated that all genuine fur and fur trim garments sold in the state must be accompanied by “true fur” labels, and all garments made of artificial fur You must attach a "faux fur" label.
