Japan plans to increase import tariffs on more than 400 major Chinese products

According to Japanese media reports, the Japanese government decided on the 28th to increase the import tariffs on more than 400 kinds of products in mainland China.

According to the report, Japan has always adopted a low-tariff "preferential tariff system" for products imported from mainland China and other developing countries from the perspective of supporting economic development. However, considering that mainland China will surpass Japan and become the second largest economy in the world, the Japanese government believes that if the system continues to be implemented on products in mainland China, it will deviate from its original intention of "helping the poor."

According to the plan formulated by the Japanese government, in the future, products that are not imported from mainland China will have a dramatic increase in the number of products that do not enjoy the “preferential tariff system” from 13 to about 450. Product categories include daily necessities, clothing, and agricultural products. The Japanese government plans to submit the plan at the congress that will be held in early 2011, and formally implement it on April 1.

The report pointed out that increasing the import tariffs on products in mainland China may lead to the rise in the retail prices of domestic goods in Japan and further affect the daily lives of the people.
