The yellow-painting New Year pictures of the Qing Dynasty thicken the year of the rabbit
The traditional trio of New Year customs—hanging artillery, pasting couplets, and sticking red paper—have long been the magical tools for creating a festive atmosphere during Chinese New Year. But how many people today still hang New Year pictures? Who remembers Qin Shubao and Yu Chigong, the legendary generals guarding the gates with their iron whips? Or the tales of mice marrying women, fat wanderers riding squid, and the stove god watching over the household? Last afternoon, the Sichuan Museum's special New Year exhibition brought visitors back to the warm memories of the past.
"Secretary of the Century 'Goddess'"
Eyes still bright
Last afternoon, a reporter from the Chengdu Evening News entered the temporary exhibition hall on the first floor of the Sichuan Museum, which officially opened this morning. The exhibition features 171 pieces of New Year pictures framed in traditional styles, like pages of an old yellow history book, quietly exuding the charm of years gone by and the enduring joy of the festival.
According to the report, the exhibition includes 132 sets totaling 171 pieces, featuring 83 Mianzhu New Year pictures and 88 Suzhou New Year pictures, including 32 from the Qing Dynasty. Notable works include "Three Monkeys Eating Pigs" and "Xue Dingshan’s Triumph." The reporter noticed that even the Qing Dynasty-era works such as "Tianguan Men," "Samurai Gatemen," and "Fushou Shouxi Gatemen" remain vibrant despite the aged rice paper, especially the fierce eyes of warriors and the imposing bronze bells.
Paintings Collected from Mianzhu
Snow Temperature Chamber for Sixty Years
Wei Xuefeng, vice president of the Sichuan Museum, explained that since the 1950s, the museum has sent personnel to Mianzhu to collect and preserve both northern and southern Mianzhu New Year paintings. For six decades, these artworks have been stored in a constant-temperature room, keeping their colors vivid and lively.
"The inheritance system of New Year pictures is very delicate. Determining their age involves multiple factors such as style and printing blocks," said Wei. As a form of intangible cultural heritage, traditional themes still dominate, but there are also modern works reflecting contemporary life. The reporter saw a Mianzhu New Year painting depicting a woman riding a bicycle, and a woodcut from Suzhou featuring a "model worker."
New Year Pictures Are Becoming More Refined
Prices Keep Rising
Wei Xuefeng told the reporter that New Year pictures are an independent genre of Chinese folk art, reflecting history, life, beliefs, and customs. Originating from ancient primitive religions, they took shape during the Song Dynasty and flourished in the Qing Dynasty. The four famous schools of New Year pictures in China are Mianzhu, Suzhou Taohuawu, Tianjin Yangliuqing, and Weifang Yangjiazhang.
However, with the times, New Year pictures have gradually shifted from their original purpose of warding off evil to becoming more artistic and decorative. In the Mianzhu New Year painting village, some works are now turned into porcelain plates or embroidered designs. A small hand-painted Mianzhu New Year picture can cost between 10 to 30 yuan, while larger ones may go up to 200 or 300 yuan.
Friendly Reminder

From February 4th to 8th (the first to the sixth day of the first lunar month), the Sichuan Museum will invite inheritors of Mianzhu and Jiajiang New Year pictures to perform live painting demonstrations and sell their works to the public at prices ranging from 15 to 50 yuan.
The exhibition also offers templates for visitors to try their hand at printing New Year pictures and take home their own handmade creations. The event will run until February 13 and is free for all visitors. There will also be raffles and riddles for a chance to win New Year-themed prizes.
